Psalm 89: 1-4
I will sing of your steadfast love, O LORD, forever; with my mouth I will proclaim your faithfulness to all generations.
I declare that your steadfast love is established forever; your faithfulness is as firm as the heavens.
You said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one, I have sworn to my servant David: ‘I will establish your descendants forever, and build your throne for all generations.'”
Like the sentimental children’s book “Love You Forever”, God promises to us to be with us from birth to death, from generation to generation.
The author of the book, Robert Munsch, wrote the refrain I Love You Forever, as a song to his two babies born stillborn. It was a song he wrote that he could not sing, for when he tried to sing it, he could only cry. A song of truth, birthed out of pain, and then written as a testament of love.
“I’ll love you forever,
I’ll like you for always,
as long as I’m living
my baby you’ll be.”
The story begins with the mother rocking back and forth with her newborn with a song and it ends with the son cradling his elderly mother and singing the same refrain. It tells the story of LOVE- the selfless act of providing care in the mundane moments of life.
Just as David reminds us that the heavens remain when we sleep and when we wake, God’s promises remain.
Even when our circumstances are painful. Even when we cannot see what lies ahead, or our bodies fail, God’s promise stands true.
His promise of a throne for all generations is a covenant of care. For the kings of this earth are often weak, selfish and unable to provide all we need. Not the LORD. He has promised a King who will bring LOVE through ultimate care for His people.
I’ll Love You Forever,
I’ll Like You for Always,
As the God of the Living,
My People You’ll Be.
And as His people, we also grow a family tree from the soil of love- enriched and founded on God’s agape love that will reach all generations..
Today we light the candle of LOVE.
